DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use a 'Memory Manager' program in either Win
ME or Win XP - they are guaranteed to cause many more problems than can
possibly purport to solve!!!!
Win ME's own memory management system is the best-of-breed of the Win 9x
systems - and far better than any third-party offering!
REMOVE THAT POS immediately - and check that the following apply
afterward.......
1) If you have less than 512MB RAM installed - make sure that your
System.ini file is clear of ANY entries in the [vcache] section
2) Check that Windows is set to manage Virtual Memory - on whichever drive
you want it
3) There should be no entries for either MaxPhysPage, or MinPhysPage in
System.ini (or in Win.ini - I can never remember where they live, as they
should never be present anyhow, except under very specific circumstances!)
post back if your RAM is more than 512MB - feel free to email me with your
system.ini and win.ini files so I can check them over (my email is valid)
RAM which is not 'in use' might as well be hung on the wall for all the good
that it might be doing you - Windows ME attempts to find a use for every
byte of RAM that you have - and releases it very quickly if it finds a
better use! (far quicker than any disk read is capable of being)
..
If you want 'free RAM' - there are three ways to get it.....
1) switch off the PC
2) take out the RAM stick and hang it on the wall
3) install a third-party Memory Manager
ALL will achieve the object - and all will have much the same result on the
system!
