OK, I stand corrected. Uninstalling the Acer desktop utilities DID correct
the problem, but much like in the other noted threads the CD drive icon still
had the 'slashed circle' superimposed. The icon for the CD drive didn't
change back, now it just doesn't mean anything. USB based removable medias
now exhibit the 'undetermined' icon.
Oh well, better than being completely broke I suppose.
