Updates made removable media inaccessible

Last weeks round of updates on my 'Vista Business' platform has made all
removable media volumes inaccessible. I get 'permission denied' and looking
at the volume properties Windows can't tell me who the current owner is.
Taking ownership as Administrator is unsuccessful. In addition, a shared USB
printer is no longer accessible across the network. The share exists but
nobody can use it.

Having noted some previous threads about desktop utilities removal fixing
the problem, I uninstalled all the Acer utilities on this unit, but it's made
no difference with regard to this issue.

Any help appreciated.

OK, I stand corrected. Uninstalling the Acer desktop utilities DID correct
the problem, but much like in the other noted threads the CD drive icon still
had the 'slashed circle' superimposed. The icon for the CD drive didn't
change back, now it just doesn't mean anything. USB based removable medias
now exhibit the 'undetermined' icon.

Oh well, better than being completely broke I suppose.
