I have a new ASUS netbook with XP Home SP3 pre-installed. I have downloaded
and installed all the hotfixes and weekly updates.

I don't have MS Office 2007 (or 2003). When I run MS Windows Update it asks
if I want to install a number of MS Office patches, i.e.,

951944, 954326, 951596, 951808, 936960, 934062, and two Powerpoint service
packs, as well as two Windows Live updates 951125 and 946486. I dont use
Windows Live.

Do I need to do these or not?

Thank you

1. You have Microsoft Update set as your default update source; otherwise,
you wouldn't be offered the Office and Windows Live Updates.

To change that, go to Microsoft Update | Click on Change Settings in left
pane | Scroll to bottom of page | To Stop Using Microsoft Update | Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check).

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep any Office applications fully patched:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/do...incatalog.aspx

2a. Are you certain that you don't have Windows Live Writer or Windows Live
Photo Gallery installed? If you installed Windows Live Messenger using the
Windows Live "all-in-one" installer and did a default install, chances are
both applications are installed. Check Add/Remove Programs list.

2b. The Office Updates may be offered because you have any number of Office
Viewers installed (e.g., PowerPoint Viewer 2003; Word Viewer 2007).

It's highly unlikely that Microsoft Update would offer the Office and
Windows Live updates if some applicable software wasn't installed, Rich.

They won't hurt anything - and you may have the stuff installed (whether you
use it or not.)

Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs -->Make sure "Show Updates" is
checked.

Windows Live should be near the bottom of the list.
You might have components of Office installed (like a PowerPoint Viewer,
etc.)

Uninstall whatever full applications you *do not need*, but otherwise - just
accept those updates.

To: PA Bear:

You are right! There are MS Office and Works components there that I havent
touched.

The netbook is an ASUS EeePC 1000H with XP Home pre-installed. It has the PP
Viewer. I didnt activate the Live Writer but it is lurking there. ASUS
includes a number of components like MS Works that i havent used.

Thanks for the info.

Also thans to Shenan Stanley for the reply post as well.

If you're not going to uninstall MS Office and MS Works (hard to believe
that both are installed but...), yes, you should install all of the Office
Updates.

If anything named "Windows Live" is listed in Add/Remove Programs, you
should either uninstall the applications or install the Windows Live
update(s).

If only the "Get Windows Live Now!" installer is on the machine (e.g., icon
on the desktop) and no Windows Live apps are listed in Add/Remove Programs,
just delete the installer to the Recycle Bin.

YW & thanks for your feedback.
