1. You have Microsoft Update set as your default update source; otherwise,
you wouldn't be offered the Office and Windows Live Updates.
To change that, go to Microsoft Update | Click on Change Settings in left
pane | Scroll to bottom of page | To Stop Using Microsoft Update | Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only (check).
With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep any Office applications fully patched:

2a. Are you certain that you don't have Windows Live Writer or Windows Live
Photo Gallery installed? If you installed Windows Live Messenger using the
Windows Live "all-in-one" installer and did a default install, chances are
both applications are installed. Check Add/Remove Programs list.
2b. The Office Updates may be offered because you have any number of Office
Viewers installed (e.g., PowerPoint Viewer 2003; Word Viewer 2007).
It's highly unlikely that Microsoft Update would offer the Office and
Windows Live updates if some applicable software wasn't installed, Rich.
