How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822798

3a. Check Windowsupdate.log (%windir%\Windowsupdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left
pane > Solve problems on your own.

Automatic Updates or is the system going to one of the Windows Update
sites ?

Check the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory [folder].
Start at the bottom and work your way upwards.
It's *** very possible that Norton is the culprit ***

Copy&paste the last 30 - 40 lines of the log into your reply if you
locate error codes.
Their format is 0x00000000

I'm sorry if this isn't going to me much help. The exception being is that
you are not alone.

If it's any consolation to you, I recent reinstalled Windows XP 2nd Edition.
Following on, I had much trouble trying to install certain items of software
and had to reboot serveral times.

May I suggest that you wait a while to find out if other newsgroup
contributers can come up with a solution and I hope that they do because I
can then either try to follow their suggestions, or, see what my computer
vendor suggests.
