Updates Not being Detected by Automatic Updates

I'm running WinXP SP2, and I have automatic updates turned on, but I am not
getting notified when updates are available.

The last several times that updates were released, I received no
notification at all through Automatic Updates that they were available -
even several days to a week after they were released, I still was not
notified.

Has anyone else experienced this, and know how to fix it?

Do the updates show up on http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

Yes they do.
They just aren't picked up by Automatic Updates.

There are several possibilities but it would be best to look at your
log to know what the real fix should be.

Try this. Use Task Manager to find out if wuauclt.exe is running.
(Check Show Processes from All Users to make sure that you are
seeing it even if it wasn't started by your account.)

If it isn't running you could try starting it manually by Run...

wuauclt.exe /detectnow

(Alternatively you could check the log for a message such as

Setting next AU detection timeout to 2005-04...

and then wait until after that to see what it did.)

If it is running you may find its icon in the Notification area.
(And if you don't make it Always Show you may have to hunt
for it in the hidden set.)

If it is running use Task Manager to find its PID. (You may have
to use TM's View, Select Columns... command to add that item.
I'm not sure if it is a default or not.) Then you can Run...

notepad %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

Next scroll to the bottom and find (up) messages which contain that PID.
They would give you clues about what that task has done.

Etc.

Good luck

I had a similar problem. After going to the windows update website, it was
always giving me an error code and saying that the download section is down.

I googled the error code (can't remember the exact code) and found a list of
results that helped me out. One involved removing registry items

sorry i couldn't be any more help but it may give you a guide in the right
direction to fixing your problem
