Updates not completeing, shuting down

My daughters laptop has Vista Home Basic. When I turn it on it says
confiuring updates: stage 3 of 3, do not turn off your computer. After a few
minutes it shuts down & starts the same process all over again. I can't get
past that to find the problem. I tried starting in safe mode & running a test
for memory, no matter what I do, I can't get past the update screen. Not an
expert for sure, but this is frustrating. Need help!

THANK YOU!!! I had been at this all morning & getting nowhere! It is up &
running now, you saved this laptop from the hammer test! Thanks Again!
