I reinstalled windows on my computer yesterday and began updating it at
http://www.update.microsoft.com/ right away, the first two rounds of High
Priority updates installed without any problems but since then I have been
unable to install any updates. They seem to download fine but then I get:

Some updates were not installed

The following updates were not installed:

Update for Windows XP (KB951978)
Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB938127)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB953838)
Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)

I have been having similar problems trying to install windows live
messenger from http://get.live.com/messenger.

I reformated my harddrive and reinstalled windows again and the same thing
happend. I have dissabled my firewall and antivirus, as well I've gone
through all the trouble shooters I can find and nothing has made any
difference.

OS: windows XP Pro SP3
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 1.80GHz
RAM: 512 MB 1.79GHz
HD: 37.2GB (28.9GB Free)
VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeon 9700 pro

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP
installation or you repair a Windows XP installation

Did you check the Windowsupdate.log file?

Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\windowsupdate.log, and then click
OK.
Locate the name of the update by searching for the specific update in the
log file.

Are there any relevant error codes?

Copy and paste the lines which are relevant to the failed updates into this
posting or in the alternative, you may wish to undertake a search of the
Newsgroup for the specific codes.
