Updates not installing when turning off computer

I have a little windows update icon sitting on my "turn off my computer
icon". There is a message with it which says "Click Turn Off to install
important updates and turn off your computer".

My computer then appears to install three updates during close down and then
switched itself off.

When I reboot my computer and then click on Start > Turn Off Computer, the
little windows update icon is still there as iof the update has not happened.

Please help!

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Scan for and install all critical updates. Do not get hardware drivers of
any type from here.
Reboot after installing the updates you find there.
