Vista Home premium. Logging in using a Standard account. WU set to notify me
to download and install available updates. It doesn't.
Can anyone point a way to a solution?

Absent any serious numerical Errors in your WindowsUpdate.log, you may be
seeing a delay caused by excessive demand on the servers ("Update is not
allowed to download due to regulation"). It can take up to 7 days for all
Automatic Update users to get new updates when so many have been released.

You can try downloading/installing the updates by running Windows Update
manually: Understand that by doing so, you're pushing all the Automatic
Updates users further back in the queue (which may explain, at least in
part, why Automatic Updates hasn't brought them in for you yet).

PA Bear,

Don't know if this is relevant, but I have a minor issue that I think
the OP might be talking about.

In my case, my computer has been notified about updates, but the
notification icon in the task bar is absent. I almost never see it, and
the only way I find out about the updates is by running it manually.
Note that when I open the update window, it does not have to scan for
needed updates, they are already there. It just never notifies me.

In Windows XP, WU only notified administrators by default. I don't know for
certain Vista behaves the same way, but I suspect it might.

You can change this by setting the ElevateNonAdmins registry key as described in
this document:
