I was having the same issue. Someone in another post clued me into registry
issues and I remembered that recently I installed Registry Booster to clean
up my registry in an attempt to resolve some other issues. I restored the
original Registry that I backed up before running Registry Booster and the
updates worked. I submitted a Technical Support request to Uniblue and I hope
they can provide guidance or a fix so that I can try it again. In the
meantime I won't run it again. I don't know how applicable to anyone else my
resolution is, but after a few hours of messing around this is what finally
worked for me.

You receive an "Error 80070643" error message when you try to update Office 2003 by
using Software Update Services
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=903772

Note, if Windows Live Safety Center Registry Clean-up has been used, then you need to
restore the registry keys that were deleted in the clean-up.

Use control panel "Folder Options", tab "View", to enable "Show hidden files and
folders"
Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Windows Live Safety Center\BackUp\
and double-click the .reg file previously created by the Microsoft Safety registry
cleanup.

Hopefully you found a solution long ago, but what I've had to do is the
opposite of some suggestions - so this may be useful to someone.

Yesterday I installed Vista Ultimate and added Office 2003 Pro, then I
applied the downloaded Office 2003 SP2 files. They installed without error.
Today I changed the default "Windows Update" setting to use the full
"Microsoft Update". All 12 "important" updates for Office failed with error
80070643. KB articles 903772 and 903774 gave some ideas, but the service was
okay, I doubted the OSI file was corrupt, and didn't fancy a reinstall.

My next step was to download some of the updates and try to install them
manually. They all failed with error 1603. More interesting were the repeated
messages in their very detailed update logs - "Product {guid} not installed".
Hmm.

Several posts refer to using the Microsoft "Office 2003 Local Installation
Source tool" to disable the LIS. When I ran the tool it showed me that I
hadn't installed the LIS (i.e. the option in the Office installer that asks
if you want to copy the install-files onto the hard disk), so I wondered if
my problem could be the reverse? Therefore I enabled LIS. The tool prompted
me for my Office CD, and the cab files were copied pretty quickly.

Next, I ran one of the manual updates - and it worked. I then went back to
Windows Update and selected "Try again". All 11 of the remaining updates then
installed without error. Woohoo! :-)

I have the exact same problem with the update. But I do not have the folder
DOcuments and Settings. It seems that after VISta upgrade I have something
else. Under users and my name I have application data but nothing Windows
Live Safety...etc.
I keep getting the same error when I try to reinstall. How can I do it
without the backup directory you indicated?
Thanks, Tom

Right I've just had the problem on my Vista Ultimate Machine. The problem was
created by having 2 partitions and removing the second. As the Local
installation source finds the partition with the largest free space to create
the MSOcache folder. Deleting the partition effectively removed the Cache.

I used the LIS tool to change the drive back to C: and all my updates have
been install succesfully

Thanks Lancea for your great post.

LIS Tool can be found here

I had to do a variation of this, but using LISTool is the ticket.

I first had to download and install the LISTool tool - here's the link from
Onzarob's post above.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Run the tool.
I selected "Delete and disable LIS". LISTool Finished successfully.

Run the tool again.
I selected Enable LIS.
I clicked Browse to go to the install CD in the DVD drive.
Select the CD Drive root (E:\ in my system) after Windows has finished
reading the CD's directory.
I had some trouble here. Several times after clicking OK, LISTool crashed
with error 0x8007000f. I searched but did not find out what that means...
After trying several times, I found that after scrolling the browse tree to
populate all the .cab files in the list, it proceeded to copy the files
without the error. It seems I had to force the OS to read the full file
structure of the disk manually. YMMV.

As noted by Onzarob above, the MSOCache directory used for storing the MS
Office install files was created on the drive with the most free space, not
the drive where Office is installed. That is not a good assumption, if you
ask me. I want it on the C drive, where all things OS and Application
related belong, unless you're a masochist. Not that there's anything wrong
with being a masochist.

So if there is more than one logical drive in your system, first make sure
you have hidden files set to visible, then search all drives for the
MSOCache folder. If it is not on the drive where you believe it belongs...
Run the tool again.
Select Move the LIS to a different drive.
Finish the wizard and you'll see the folder has moved.

From this point on my problem is solved, and not likely to happen again.

Prior to this, I had a lot of MS Office updates which all failed with 0x
80070643.
I suspect MSOCache was missing, since I don't think it existed before I did
the fix, and I'm pretty sure I selected the option to copy install files to
disk during install. I might have even nuked MSOCache myself some time long
ago, since nothing but user's data files belongs on the drive it chose by
default.

After the fix, I have successfully installed quite a few updates that failed
so many times, I had them hidden in MS Update to avoid the constant
reminders. I'm going to finish installing the rest now.

Good luck and hope this helps. I've tried many times to find a solution to
this, and none of the other solutions posted anywhere else made any
difference. Thanks to lancea and Onzarob for pointing me in the right
direction.

For me it worked also with the LIST tool.
I downloaded it, extractd it to temp and then ran it.
Since I had my MSOCache on the M drive, I just moved the location as offered
in the list tool to C and now all updates automatically installed. Took me
over a year to find this solution.
