any suggestions?

Is ther any possibility that WUs are being spoofed and bringing junk in?

Check the WindowsUpdate.log to see if the updates are being regulated:

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Start at the bottom of the log for the most recent entries.
Regulated entries look like these -

download. Sequence 8519 vs AcceptRate 154.

Updates are not downloaded or the “Automatic Updates” icon does not
display the status of downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates

You're mowst welcome. You can get XP to install the already downloaded
Security updates by clicking Start > Run > type in
wuauclt
Click OK or press Enter
At the very least, the Security updates should now install and the
system will not have to wait for non-security content to be downloaded.
You could also choose Shutdown from the Start Menu and that will also
offer Install updates on Shutdown. You can tell by the Automatic Update
icon overlay on Shutdown and the link under the Shutdown options gives
you the opportunity to shut the system down *without* installing
downloaded updates.
