About 5 or 6 days ago I got an update (I use automatic updates),
KB931784. It says that it installed, but every time I reboot or dun
Updates, it wants to update again. On the Windows Update website, it
says that it is already downloaded. I called Microsoft and they told
me to go to "add/remove programs" and check "show updates" and that
would fix it. It didn't. Then they emailed me the message below,
with 8 steps to try, any of which might work. I've tried the first
six (it took several hours) but the problem is still here.

Is there any way to keep this update from keep re-offering itself?

============================
Updates Re-offered After Download and Install

Any one or all of the following 9 steps may work. Test after each
step.

1. Rename the Edb.log file

Start, Run, type command, and then click OK.
At the DOS prompt, type:
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2\Edb.log *.tst

2. Set Cryptographic Services to automatic.

Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.
Double-click Services.
Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.
Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.
Note: Windows 2000 does not list Cryptographic Services in the
SERVICES Administrative Utility.

3. Rename the Catroot2 folder.

.... (long message from Miscrosoft)

I forgot to mention that this is Windows XP Media Center SP2. Up
until now I've installed all updates.

Assuming you're on Windows XP SP2:

Try downloading the update manually via DownloadCenter:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...d-a9f1eae19b51

*Save* the file to a folder your harddisk (let me call it "C:\Downloads"),
do *not* execute it from within your browser.

Afterwards type the following under "Run" in the Start menu:
"C:\Downloads\WindowsXP-KB931784-x86-ENU.exe" /o

The parameter "/o" (o like overwriteOEM) should do the trick for you.
Note the blank between the last quote sign and the parameter /o!

Bye,
Freudi

Thanks, that fixed it! (after I spent more than 3 hours following
Microsoft's instructions, without success).

Have you provided them the "solution" you've found?

No, I haven't. A couple of days after I initially called Microsoft
(the number it said to call if you have problems with the security
update) a guy from MS called and asked if my problem was resolved. I
told him no, and he told me to call MS Full Support. He said that he
would call me back Wednesday (tomorrow) to see if the problem is
resolved. I decided to ask on the newsgroups rather than call MS full
support.
