Updates repeatedly fail- error 80070003

Hi,
I'm at my wit's end, hope someone here can help. A week or so ago I
tried to install SP2. The little icon sat there in the tray at 0% for
days, as my system ran slower and slower. Finally it was taking over an
hour just to boot up and I'd had enough. I stopped the download and
uninstalled everything that was downloaded from SP2. My system
immediately went back to normal, but now will not accept any updates.

Every time I boot up, I get a prompt to install update #KB828741.
When I try to install it, I get "Installation failure error code
80070003." The same thing happens with other updates as well, same error
code.

I'm also not getting any sound on my system since then. Apparently
the partial install of SP2 messed up my drivers or something, but I
can't find the trouble, everything seems functional, but no sound.

Any help or advice is most welcome, I've tried everything I can think
of so far. I'm not a computer expert, please keep it simple. :-) Thanks.

Robyn

To avoid grizzlies, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game advises hikers
to wear noisy little bells on clothes and carry pepper spray. Also watch
for signs of activity: Black bear scat is smaller and contains berries;
grizzly scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

Hi

If the directory "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network"
does not exist, you will get this error.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE% is normally "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users"

To verify existence/create this folder, you can do like this:

Press Start/Run, and fill in this:

"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft"

Press OK, and the Microsoft folder will open.

If no Network folder is found there, create it (File\New --> Folder).

Thanks for your reply. :-) I verified existence of the folder. It
contained a "connections" and a "downloader" folder. Is there anything
else I can check?

Thanks,
Robyn

Hi

Please check the following log files for any clues or other error messages:

%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log
%windir%\KB828741.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You could also post the last 20-30 lines from the files here.

Well, I really don't know what I'm looking for... I see a lot of stuff
about "download failed," but we knew that already. :-) Here's a tiny

And here's a small piece of the KB828741 Log, it makes even less sense
than the othe one to me:

Both of these came from the very end of the file and appear to be the
most current. Hopefully they'll tell you more than they tell me. :-)

Oh, I also wanted to add, that after the problems started, I tried to
use System Restore to just undo everything and revert to where I was,
but it wouldn't work. I just kept getting the message that it "Cannot be
restored to that restore point." I did try several different restore
points, with the same result. I don't know if that's related or not, but
thought I'd better mention it.

Again, thanks so much for your assistance. :-)

Take care,
Robyn

Hi

No, it didn't make it any clearer ;-)

Please download and install KB828741 yourself from here and see
if it installs successfully:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-012.mspx

To reset the temporary pending downloads, clean out the Download
folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You can use the procedure described here:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=11&ln=en

You might need to delete the DataStore folder mentioned in the link
above, as well as the Download folder.

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

Well, I lost my connection for a while last night (I'm in Florida,
it's been in and out since the hurricane.) So while I was fooling around
I decided to try reinstalling XP. It made no difference that I couls
see, but I thought I'd mention it so you know what I had done so far.
Anyway, I tried downloading KB828741 from the link you gave and it
actually worked. :-) However, it then prompted me to take another
upgrade (KB842773) and the same thing as before happened. I cleared out
the folders you mentioned, and still no change. BUT, then I decided to
try and download directly from the download area you gave me in the
link, just did a search for the update number. Not only did that work,
but apparently that last one opened up the bottleneck. WU then prompted
me for about 14 more updates, which it took and installed flawlessly!
:-D I think what might have happened is that the reinstall of XP cleared
out a lot of the old updates, and maybe one of those was what was
screwing up the downloads. Seems logical, anyway. I think. :-)

So now the damn thing is wanting to install SP2 again. Yeah right.
Sorry Microsoft, I'm not doing that again, my computers plenty secure,
TYVM.

Thank you so very very much for your help, no way I could have gotten
this fixed without you. :-) Not to presume further, but I don't suppose
you know why I still don't have any sound? That happened at the same
time and is the only thing that didn't return to normal. Everything
appears to play and function fine, but there's no sound. I've been
through all the troubleshooters, and nothing. It acts just like it would
if you unplugged the speakers. (Except they're plugged in and fine.)

Or would I be better off asking in the music NG?

In any case, I can't thank you enough. :-)

Take care,
Robyn

Yes, I think so, at least I have no idea what it can be.

This post was a life saver. I kept getting install errors and there was
nothing of value that I could find in the MS Knowledge base by entering Error
Code: 80070003. Getting rid of the downloads and pending updates fixed the
problem and I'm back up and running.

I think there is a bug with the autoupdate when you select to autoinstall.
From now I'm I am just setting it to notify me.
