Updates service hung on Starting

This is weird, I try to stop the service and cannot because it is neither
started or stopped but "Starting"
No other option is available they are grayed out.

Haw can I overcome this?

Try this:

Register the following system files
Click Start > Run
Type: net.exe stop wuauserv
Press OK
Repeat the above steps for the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Try the WU site again.

1. Reboot the computer.
2. You may have to reinstall the WU Service
You receive a "Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page" error message when you try to install an update
