OK Auto Update stopped working (I'm running Windows XP professional x64
edition)
I also noticed that when I select properties on "My Computer" I get the error
"This application has failed to start because WINHTTP.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the aplication may fic the problem"
So I tried every thing I can find here to fic the bits problem including
down loading the following
Windows-KB890830-V1.21.exe
WindowsXP-KB842773-v2-x86-enu.exe
One to reinstall Upate and one to fix BITS and WinHTTP.
When I try to run either of the above I get the following error dialogue: -
Extraction failed
The system cannot find the file specified.
I'm assuming that they (the KB fixes) are trying to run using update.exe.
So how do I install a fix that useses the thing thats broken to run the fix?
Catch 22 maybe.
I can not start the bits service as I get the following error in Eventlog

The dll is in system32 (version 5.8.0.2469 built by 5.8.0.2469 built by:

I also get the same error (with "qmgr.dll" in the braces) when I run: -
