I have XP and today I got updates and they just installed themselves
despite me having it set to download updates and wait for me to allow
them to install.

Does anyone know whats up with that?

It happened twice on two different XP pc's

Control Panel > Automatic Updates: Is the "Download but notify" option still
selected here?

Have you installed OneCare?

Do us a favor please, Jeanette? Open Windows Explorer to and right-click on
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log <=this file (not Windows_Update.log) | Select
"Send to" | "Compressed (ZIP) file" | Email this file (WindowsUpdate.zip) to
either me (pabearATgmail.com) or Susan Bradley. We'll pass it on to MS
techs for analysis and will then provide you with feedback from them.

Alternately, you can open a free Windows Update Support Incident about this
yourself: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

Thanks so much.

It happened again this morning on this box when I started it up so I am
sending the log for this computer to you and susan.

The date to check is 12/13/07

Is a boot involved? I think that once the updates are downloaded
they are only blocked from being applied during the same user session.
So if you don't decline the updates once they are downloaded but
boot first they may get applied automatically. One other way to prevent
that from happening, e.g. during shutdown, would be to stop the wuauserv
service. And to ensure that they couldn't be installed automatically after
the boot you would have to disable that service as well.

We've reviewed your WindowsUpdate.log. It tells us:

1. Automatic Updates is configured to the "Download but notify" setting:

<QP>
2007-12-13 09:18:28:750 1104 c8c AU # Approval type: Pre-install notify
(User preference)

2007-12-13 09:18:28:750 1104 c8c AU # Auto-install minor updates: No (User
preference)
</QP>

2. No updates have been installed since 11 Dec-07.

3. Eight (8) updates have been downloaded and await approval to install,
hence Automatic Updates is honoring the "Download but notify" setting:

<QP>
2007-12-13 09:26:11:593-0800 1 189 102
{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
0 0 AutomaticUpdates Success Content Install Installation Ready: The
following
updates are downloaded and ready for installation. To install the updates,
an
administrator should log on to this computer and Windows will prompt with
further instructions: - Security Update for Windows XP (KB944653) -
Security
Update for Windows XP (KB941568) - Cumulative Security Update for Internet
Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB942615) - Security Update for Windows XP
(KB941569) - Update for Windows XP (KB942763) - Windows Malicious Software
Removal Tool - December 2007 (KB890830) - Update for Windows Live Writer (KB
946058) - Security Update for Windows XP (KB937894)
</QP>

4. No updates for Windows Defender have been downloaded yet this week. A
Defender update may have downloaded and be ready to install now.

5. You have a third-party Windows theme installed
(http://www.astonshell.com/aston/). Such themes can wreak havoc with
Windows and Automatic Updates. I'd recommend uninstalling it:

<QP>
> 2007-12-11 09:35:40:312 8272 26bc Misc = Process:
> E:\PROGRA~1\Aston\aston.exe

</QP>

6. It would appear that you may have a beta version of Secunia Software
Inspector installed:

<QP>
> 2007-12-10 02:52:29:250 7452 1ad8 Misc = Process: E:\Program
> Files\Secunia\PSI (BETA)\PSI.exe

</QP>

I would strongly recommend uninstalling it and relying on Automatic Updates
to tell you what updates the machine needs.

Conclusion: Automatic Updates is working properly and no updates have
"installed themselves."
