Problem solved.
It appears there seems to be a bug in windows update.
when selecting recieve updates for more microsoft products, routing to
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
and installing. Afterwards windows update, as well as ultimate extras is
unable to detect new updates for vista and returns an invald PID error.
change settings in the windows update applet, and removing the option to
search for other microsoft product updats fixed this.
