K.C.,
It appears that Norton 360 has an anti-spyware component, PC security,
according to Symantec:
" PC security defends against viruses, spyware, botnets, and more.
Protects your computer and all your online activities. "
Further down the page it states N360 has " Automated antivirus and
antispyware "
That means that when it was installed, Windows Defender *should* have
been disabled during it's installation as running 2 anti-spyware
programs concurrently that monitor the sysem with *real time protection*
will cause conflict issues.
IF one of the anti-spyware programs does *not* monitor the system with
real time protection, then conflict issues will not occur.
Real-time protection
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_protection
Windows Defender: Real-Time Protection
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...meprotect.mspx
Examples of anti-spyware programs that can be configured to not use any
real time protection at all or do not contain real time protection are:
AdAware (free version has no real time protection)
Spybot Search and Destroy (free version has no real time protection)
a-squared Free (offers no real time protection)
Either disable Norton 360's anti-spwyare component, uninstall Norton 360
when the subscription expires and obtain an antivirus program that does
not include an anti-spyware component, or, if you intend on keeping
N360, disable Windows Defender as an Automatically started service from
within the Services console. ( Click the Start orb, in the Start Search
filed type in
services.msc
Under Programs, click on services.msc
When the UAC prompt comes up, enter a password if one is used and click
the Continue button or, if no password is used, click the Continue button. )
Or, just *right* click the Computer icon on the Desktop or Start menu
and choose 'Manage'. Go through the UAC prompt
In the middle frame double left click Services and Application.
Double left click on Services.
Scroll down the Windows Defender, double left click it.
Set the Startup type to Disabled.
Click Apply, click OK.
Close the Services console or the Computer Management console.
Which console is open depends on which method you used to access Services.
