Updates were not installed message

I recently reinstalled XP Professional over the top of the existing one on my
PC. Since I did so, the "yellow shield" appears to install "Updates ready
for you computer"; however when I do so a list of a large number of updates
comes up with the message they were not installed. I have tried several
times without success, can anybody help? Do I have to find them on my PC and
delte them: if so where to I find them?
Q 2: As part of attempting to solve the above problem, when I ran Windows
Update again, I attempted to download the "Windows Validation Tool" as
requested; but it won't install either (I have a genuine copy of Windows XP).
What can I do?

Hello rbc,

For your Q2.- Test this WGA diagnose test, connection to MS, that scripts
working and a new Validation tool

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

I hope that help you to resolve Q1.-

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

Thanks Engel,
Have done that and "validated" Office and Windows OK. I then ran Windows
update again and 74 updates downloaded successfully; but failed to install.
The error message does not give a code, it just says there is a problem on
the computer stopping the installation.
I tried a solution posted by Shenan Stanley today, but after step 3 Windows
said the link did not exist - it seemed to work in that the Yellow Shield
disappeared from the tool bar at the bottom of the screen; but as described
above the problem is back.
Fortunately the validation problem seems to be fixed now.
Thanks for the help,
rbc

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

2. Now (re)install this (updated) fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
If "Update for [Windows XP] (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs
(make sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...ry/927891.mspx

3. Reboot.

I'm having the same problem. After I upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro with
SP2, I can download, but not install the updates through the automatic update
feature. (I can download each update manually without a problem. However, I
have over 70 updates that need to be run.) When I go to your first link, I
get three options. Are one of these appropriate for XP Pro?

x86-based versions of Windows
x64-based versions of Windows
Itanium-based versions of Windows

Thank you for your help!!

You'll want the x86 version, I'm sure.

To find out if you have a 32 bit system (x86) -
Click Start, Select Run, now type in: msinfo32

Rich, to avoid confusion please begin your own thread about your problem.
In your first post, reference this thread's subject and the fact that you've
already installed both WU Agent 3.0 and 927891.

Also state your Windows and IE versions and everything you've done that got
you to this point, including why you found it necessary to do a Repair
Install.

[Tip: Delete C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution <=this folder & reboot]

Thank you.
