Hi Gerry, Thanks for taking an interest. I'm afraid I had to run away from it
all for a while so I apologise for taking so long to reply but I'm now
feeling brave enough to face it all again. My problem in detail is:
I've been using automatic updates and up until several months ago it was
working fine. Actually, it was after I did an untinstall and reinstall of
Media player to iron out another bug that the problem started occuring.
Initially, I didn't pay much attention when i read "Updates were unable to be
sucessfully installed" but the list of updates kept getting longer as time
went by which is why I started looking on this forum for a solution.
Since that time I discovered I could actually get most of them installed by
selecting them individually, all bar two. Those two are:
Security Update for Windows Media Player Plug-in (KB911564), and
Security Update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP (KB917734)
Unfortunately, there is no error message attached to them. Windows Update
tells me that there downloaded to my computer but won't install from there.
When I try from the website it initially shows (2) updates next to the failed
icon but when I Review my Update History it has no failed icons showing
instead the cancelled icon next to those updates. It did appear that the
KB911564 update was blocking the others originally though. Cause it showed up
cancelled dozens of times when there was no sign of the others, that's what
gave me the idea to deselect to try and circumnavigate it. Now I'm down to
two.
I'm certainly not purposefully cancelling them myself and everytime I try to
install I get the same "Updates were unable to be sucessfully installed"
message. I've tried many times in many ways, individually and together,
manual download and a later install but always the same result.
Is there any hope for me yet? I'm all out of ideas.
P.S. I also gave this a shot be to no avail.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, remove the download directory, and then visit the
update locations again. To do this, follow these steps:1. Stop the Automatic
Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:a. Click Start, click Run,
type services.msc, and then click OK.
b. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Stop.
c. Minimize the Services snap-in.
2. Rename the SoftwareDistribution directory. To do this, follow these
steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
b. Type cd %windir%, and then press ENTER.
c. Type ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp, and then press ENTER
d. Type exit, and then press ENTER .
Note When you remove the %windir%\softwaredistribution folder, the history
list is erased from the "Review your Updates" section of the Windows Update
Web site. This action will not affect the currently installed updates on your
computer. Subsequent updates will appear in the history list.
3. Start the Automatic Updates service. To do this, follow these steps:a.
Maximize the Services snap-in.
b. Right-click the Automatic Updates service, and then click Start.
c. Close the Services snap-in window.
4. Visit the Windows Update Web site, the Microsoft Update Web site, or the
WSUS server again, and then download an update.
5. If you still receive the same errors, verify that you have correctly
performed steps 1 through 3.

Sorry about the mini novel there, just trying to cover all my bases.
Cheers and regards,
Liam
