I got:

Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

so I can't install any updates.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You're welcome ... let's try deleting the Software Distribution folder

Go to Start > Run > type in

services.msc

Click OK
Double click the Automatic Updates service
Click the Stop button
Leave the Automatic Updates Properties window open

Navigate to

Cor the root drive)\WINNT\Software Distribution and delete all of the
subfolders and their content

Go back to the Automatic Updates Properties window and click the Start
button.

Manually download KB842773 from here and save it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then download Windows Installer 3.1 (KB893803) from here and save it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Create a temp folder on the Cor root)\ drive. Name it Install if you
so desire. Move both of the downloaded files there.

With ALL programs closed, install Windows Installer first by going to
Start > Run > and then click Browse. Point to the Install folder and
then click on the downloaded Windows Installer package to highlight it,
and then click the OK button, and OK once more to start the install of
the Installer
Then use the same method to install KB842773.
Restart the system after doing the above.
