Windows update says that my Windows 2003 installation needs Service Pack 2.
The download seemed to work, but the installation fails a quarter of the way
through. Automatic Update is on and all updates have succeeded until this
time. Any ideas?

On the WU Website, select your history of updates – now click on failed update (red mark)
and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post back or in the alternative, do a search
for the error code.

Also how to view the Update log in Windows for more clues as to why it failed.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into this thread so someone may be able to assist you. On the other
hand, you may be able to find the error code and other suggestions by searching the
Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093

Finally:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 - download (for single PCs also) - for manual installation
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

SP2 CD can be ordered online.

First, the installation was cancelled not failed and so the icon is grey,
not red and clicking on it does nothing. Second, the upgrade is for Windows
2003 Server, not XP. The windowsupdate.log says "Update is not allowed to
download due to regulation."

The W2K3 sever that you are trying to Update with SP2 is it a part of a Network? Have you been in contact with the IT person that is in charge

Update is not allowed to download due to regulation
Basically telling you that Windows Update Site has prevented your computer from
downloading that day.
Try again later

Updates are not downloaded or the “Automatic Updates” icon does not display the status of
downloads when you enable the Automatic Updates service
