When I re-start my computer I am unable to get to the desktop, it askes me
for a password and I don't have one setup. Tried setting up a password and
that didn't work either. I keeped getting the error message, 'the program
issued a command but the command length is incorrect'
I tried re-starting in 'safe mode' and that didn't work either, same result.
The only way I was able to get back to my desktop was by re-starting on
'last known good configuration'.
I have been able to find out that the update that is causing this problem is
'Updates for Windows XP (KB885835)'.
If anyone can help me with this issue I would appreciate it.
Thank you

I'm running:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2, v.2096

Have you tried uninstalling it?

Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)
This update helps narrow the definition of the My network, or local subnet,
restriction option in the Windows Firewall. This is helpful in situations
where the Windows Firewall would consider a large network to be on the local
subnet because of how the dial-up software configured the route tables. After
you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.
How to Uninstall
This software update can be removed via Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel.

I haven't tried uninstalling it.
There is something I don't understand if I started my computer on 'last
known good configuration' wouldn't have that unistalled it? because when I do
I keep getting the notification of 'Critical Update for Windows XP
(KB886185)' and yet it is on the Add or Remove Programs. So that brings me to
the question if it isn't installed then why is it in the Add or Remove
Programs? and if it is installed then why is it that I can restart my
computer without using the last known good configuration and why does it keep
getting the notification 'Critical Update for Windows XP (KB886185)'?

I've got the same problem too! Please let me know when a solution
is posted. I've tried to get my brother to understand that he's got
to install the Windows updates and then this happens! We can't
logon to his machine.

I'm considering Linux for my next O.S.!

How do I try to uninstall the patch if I can't logon?

Hi,

I have gone through this several times since I installed
the KB885835 patch on 15th. Each time after the installation
the windows startup process stops after the windows logo
dissapears. Afer booting with the 'last known good configuration'
the windows update asks me to install the patch again although
it was listet in 'Add or Remove Programs'. Further I got no
sound output any more although everything seems to be working
and I got no error messages.
Uninstalling the patch solves the boot problem, but to get sound
again I had to use the 'system recovery' to get back in time to
a point the patch has not been installed yet and reinstall my sound
card drivers.

I tried installing the patch over and over again considering a
lot of possible causes. I made a BIOS update, installed new firmware
for my mainboard, tried to install the patch in safe mode...
NOTHING WORKS!!

The last time I tried it, the system recovery did not work any more,
so the sound did not come back no matter what I tried.

I am sorry that I could not help you but perhaps it is good to kno
was well what might not work.

If anyone has a good idea I am willing to try it!

Please excuse any possible mistakes as english is not my native
language.

Greetings, Til
(Germany)

Oh, I forgot one important point: each time I had those
booting problems, the hardware monitor gave me an error
message, because my CPU hat about 76°C (normaly 50°C).
Those problems also disapeared after uninstalling the patch
again.

System: Windwos XP Professional SP2
Mainboard: ASUS A7V333
CPU: Athlon XP 1800+

Frank,
you need to restart your machine under "last known good configuration" that
should get you back in to your system.
