Updates won't Install on W2K

I can't get updates to now install on my Windows 2000 Pro machine. The OS
had a malfunction a couple of weeks ago and I got that fixed and updated to
the latest service pack, but for some reason it will not install the very
latest hotfixes. I have been working with one of the Microsoft Tech's to no
avail. The latest thing we have tried is getting the Background Intelligent
Transfer Service (BITS) and WinHTTP 5.1 Windows 2000 (KB842773) Update
Installed, which I did. I tried getting the BITS service to running but it
gave me an error code - #2147024894 when it failed. The message dialogue box
said that the BITS service could not be started on the local computer. Check
the System Event Log. The System Event Log refers to another Error Code of
2147942402. I looked these up in the Knowledge Base, but nothing about BITS
is mentioned in either one. Anybody got any clues how I can get Updates to
start working again.

-2147024894 and 2147972402 are both different representations of
0x80070002

Try searching discussions involving that hex code instead?
