Updates on XP and 98 dual system

I created a dual boot system with Win98SE and XP Home. Win98 is on C drive,
and XP Home on a D partition. Last time I installed a Windows Update, the
XP update hosed the Win98, and I had to manually go thru all of the start up
components to remove (uncheck) the KB update.

How can I avoid this with the latest batch of updates that I would like to
install?

After the update, every time I tried to boot up Win98, I would get the blue
screen fatal errors half way thru the start up. I followed Microsoft's
instructions for going into safe mode, then using msconfig to not load the
start up group items. It was the KB item in the start up group that caused
the problem, as I was able to go thru and select all other items to load at
start up. After that, everything ran fine, and still runs fine - in both Win
98 and XP.
So, I am led to believe that there was an XP Home patch that did not agree
with Win98, and I want to avoid this issue again.

Thanks.

One more thing to add - I installed the previous updates while running XP
Home. Does it make a difference which OS is running when I install MS
updates? Should I install them twice, under each OS?

This sounds like you're installing the same patch into two operating
system - that CANNOT work!!

You need to go to Windows Update in each OS and download and install the
patched for that OS alone
patches are NOT the same for all OS's - and frequently will refuse to run on
a wrong OS (I'm surprised that any did in fact install!)

Anne, like Noel stated, you cannot use the same Updates for both OS's.
They each have their own updates which are
usually fixes or security patches that pertain to that individual OS. If
that's the case it's no wonder you got a BSOD.
