Updates for XP Pro fail during installation

The critical updates for Win XP Pro fail to install. The automatic updates
runs, downloads the files then trys to install them. I then Get a message
saying some of the installs failed. This is a new install of XP Pro. I
cannot get any of the security updates.

No error message is given. Everytime I run it I get the same message.

Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed

Anyone know how to fix this?

I have the same problem -- now up to 75 patches that cannot be installed. I
tried to go through the documentatin but, in true Microsoft fashion, one
needs to have a PHD to understand all the geek-talk that is encountered.

There's really no sense to the confusion factor. Things should be simple
enough for an average user to do whatever is required to solve any given
problem. Or, some sort of automatic software 'fixer' should be available.

I get exactly the same here, only in Dutch
It's a re-install of XP-Pro from CD-ROM, after
\windows\system32\config\system file was "corrupt or missing", something like
that.

I'm curious if this is a problem with microsoft that is temporary. I've
never experienced this before when installing XP and others are experiencing
this at the same time. Could anyone from Microsoft chime in? Is there
something we need to be doing on our computers?

Download Ccleaner and Dial-ª-Fix (better if run on safe mode (F-8))

CCleaner
Ccleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com
Note, uncheck Yahoos toolbar during instªll.

Do the scans with all the check marks ºn.

NOTE - The first time you run CCleaner's Issues scanner you'll have to keep
running it back-to-back until it finds nothing.

One scenario is a registry key may only be a reference pointing to a
completely different location in the registry and when it's removed then that
reference link is also noticed as being invalid on a subsequent scan.

It's generally a good idea to keep running the Issues scan until nothing is
listed.

There is also a third-party fix which has had good results for a number of
folks here:
Dial-ª--Fix
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Scroll down about 2/3 of the way to Download Dial-ª-fix

Run this program with all the functions activated in safe mode. --it may
look as if the scan has frozen. DAF is actually doing lots of shoveling and
shuffling, so don't interrupt it.

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

I tried ccleaner and it did not work. It did conveniently find too many
errors to be handled by the free version so I sent them a payment for #29.95
to get the 'found' problems fixed. Nothing in the way of solving the update
problem though.

Just a warning to those of you who might be tempted to separate yourself
from some of your hard-earned money.

It does make one wonder why all these third party companies can come up with
cleaners and spyware catchers and MSoft can't. Instead, we get a lame and
silly program called DEFENDER which, by the way, is also failing to process
updates to it's definitions on my computer.

Hi Cigar Smoker,

CCleaner is a free tool. (http://www.ccleaner.com ) you don't have to pay a
penny, you can DOnATE if is your desire.

Maybe you was redirect to a scan page.

http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Dial-a-fix is a collection of known fixes gleaned from Microsoft
Knowledgebase articles, Microsoft MVPs, and other important support forums,
that will assist you in repairing problems with your system. Although this
tool is ordinarily meant for power users, technicians, and administrators, it
is quite safe to use even without technical guidance (although guidance is
recommended).

Goof luck

ccleaner came up with 331 errors and I got the message that I had 'exceeded
the free' limit. I truly did have to cough up $29.95 to get the entire 331
errors resolved.
