Updates XP Pro fail to install

This looks a job for Mowgreen !!

This problem started after I deleted all traces of VisualStudio dotnet off
of my computer. So I did a Repair install of XP Pro.

I deleted WindowsUpdate.log so it would only show my current problem. There
are 79 updates downloaded and waiting to be installed. I clicked on the icon
and selected custom so I could see all the updates listed. Then started the
install and clicked again so I could watch it.

Bang, again failed on the first one and listed all as not installed.

The WindowsUpdate.log is 1,611KB worth and can be seen here

When accessing the Update site, you receive the 0x80240020 error

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

2. Now (re)install this (updated) fix:

NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
If "Update for Windows XP (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs (make
sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.

3. Reboot.

Did that before Repair install based on one of your replies in this
newsgroup. Will try it again.

If fails again I will try signing as as admin although I am a User with
admin rights.

Well . . .This is my development machine and I am the Admin so that takes
care of that item.
I did steps 1 and 2 while reading your prior post.

Ran EndItAll so nothing was left except Explorer and Update icon.

Again the installation failed almost immediately. Again the full log is at
