I bought a new HP and it came with 4gb ram, but it came with vista 32bit, so
its like having that 1gb ram sitting there doing nothing. How would I go
about upgrading it to the 64bit edition? I know when you buy vista, it comes
with both versions, so I know it is possible.

There is no upgrade path to a -64-bit version of Vista.
You would need to purchase a 64-bit edition of Vista
and perform a clean install.

Problem #1 is that as Carey pointed out, there is no upgrade path from
32-bit Windows to 64-bit Windows, so you'd need to clean install the 64-bit
version and hope you can find all the drivers you need.

Problem #2 is that the "both versions" provision is only valid with retail
copies of Windows. OEM copies do not include both 32-bit and 64-bit
versions nor do they include a license to use either one at your selection.
So you'd have to buy a retail copy of Windows Vista to install the 64-bit
version, or see if HP will give you a 64-bit version to install.

My HP laptop came with both 32bit and 64 bit
On commencement, I was asked which I wanted to install
Not being 100% sure, and there was no one around to ask, I took the
safe option and chose 32
