I have 32 bit home premium from a purchased upgrade from xp. My puter is
64 bit so was thinking of upgrading to 64 bit home premium but it looks
like that is impossible. Is that correct? No way I am starting from
scratch again.

Hi,

There is no upgrade path from a 32 bit installation to a 64 bit one under
any circumstances.

Hello John

You can only do a clean install when going from a 32-bit to 64-bi
Vista or Windows 7, or the other way around.

You cannot upgrade a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS. Windows 7 won't change this.

32bit and 64bit are two different platforms. It has never been possible to
'upgrade' from one platform to another..

Yes, it's correct.

Then you will have to stay with the 32-bit version you are running.

That means you have to reinstall all your software and reset all your
preferences I gather. Kind of a pain.
