Upgrade from bootleg XP to Vista

Will the Vista Upgrade work on a system with a bootleg copy of XP running?

No.

Vista requires a legal copy of Xp that has been activated and has passed the
Windows WGA test to be certified 'genuine' before you can upgrade.

Thanks! Will it be an upgrade as opposed to a clean install? (i.e. If I
purchase the full version, can I install and leave my programs etc. intact?

Not strictly true. Vista installs on my Gateway/OEM version that doesn't
activate.

It also installs on Corporate XP Pro versions that again don't activate,
but it still needs to pass the 'genuine windows' test.
