I have exchange installed on my domain controller(inherited the setup), how
can I upgrade to server 2003 without breaking exchange in the process? I
tested this in the lab and when I demoted the old server to member server
exchange died completely. What's the best way to get to server 03 without
killing my company's exchange databases?

Try the upgrade in your lab without demoting the server.

Hello Chad,

What Exchange version are you running, 2000? Then you can not do an inplace
upgrade, Exchange 2000 on server 2003 is not supported.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321648

You have move either exchange to another server or upgrade exchange to 2003
before.

Check this one before upgrading the schema if not done:

I have 2000 exchange. What articles can you point me to on how to safely
move exchange and all public folders?

Danny, I have to demote the server in order to setup admt for server 08. I
just want to move the exchange installation somewhere else for now. Did I
mention this is in a cluster also? What would i need to do order to move all
this.

Hello Chad,

Install the server as a member server (Exchange should not run on DC's) in
the domain and then install exchange to the same exchange site. After that
you can move the mailboxes and public folders to the new server.

If that is done, check this article, how to remove the first exchange server:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307917/
