Our ME operating system is freezing on new hardware installation along with
other problems and we are considering upgrading to XP. Will we be able to do
that and not lose any of our files or must we back everything up?

You won't lose your stuff but a backup is always recommended.

Before you do an upgrade download the UpgradeAdvisor from the XP web site.
Running it will result in a list of hardware and software incompatibilities.

Upgrading to XP will not fix your computer problems that you are now
experiencing. You need to have a stable system before you upgrade. JJ

You can install over the top of Window ME but it's not recommended. What is
recommeneded is you do backup all data files.

So, if you want to upgrade, then do a format of the hard drive (after backing up)
then run the XP installer and go through the procedure - if it is the Upgrade
version then it will ask for the Windows ME CD to check for a qualifying product.

XP Pro also has the Update checker on the installation CD.
