Upgrade Plan for NT4 and Server 2000

I have an NT4 Server running as PDC, a Windows 2000 Server (member server
only), and a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. I do not have a BDC.

I want to upgrade the NT4 Server to Windows 2000 and let it be a DC with AD.
I want to upgrade the Windows 2000 server to 2003 Server R2. I will
probably make that a DC as well. I will leave he Terminal Server alone. We
have only one domain.

What are your recommendations?

Bruce

I would recommend upgrading everything to Win 2k3. Why would you upgrade to
an OS that has it's mainstream support retired 4 years ago?

Not my decision. This is the best I can do.

Do the people that are in charge of making that decision know what they are
getting into? You should at least make them aware that the OS mainstream
support has been retired and they will be spending money now (to go to Win
2k), then spending money later ( to go to Win2k3 when the support runs
totally out)

The server we are upgrading will not support 2k3. They are very aware of the
money they are wasting. In today's economy, we are taking the path of least
resistance.

Thanks.

Should I make the current 2000 box a DC after upgrading the NT box and
before upgrading the current 2000 box to 2003? Or can I simply wait until I
upgrade the 2000 box to 2003 and then make it a DC?

Upgrade the NT 4.0 box to Win 2k, promote to DC. Then upgrade the existing
Win 2k box to Win 2k3.

Hello wbw,

For the upgrade make a backup of the NT4 machine and then use the 2000 installation
disk for an inplace upgrade. Just follow the wizard and keep the 2000 drivers
especially for the NIC at hand.

Doesn't matter when to make the 2000 machine DC. You can do it before upgrading
or afterwards. Just keep in mind to prepare the schema before from the second
2003 R2 disk on the 2000 DC.

Personally i would think about upgrading all servers to 2003.

Best regards
