Upgrade Problems

I'm having trouble upgrading from Windows Home Premium to Ultimate. I have
the anytime upgrade disc, purchased the license, etc.

Twice, when the upgrade process is nearly complete, I get a message that
Windows could not configure one or more system components. It then rolls
back the upgrade.

I tried booting from the CD, but the installation asked for the product key
(which I don't have, because it was "installed" automatically with the
license). I didn't want to skip the product key and then lose it if the
upgrade deleted the license file.

Anywho, any idea of what I should do?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Anytime you are doing an 'upgrade' on a Microsoft OS, you would be
better off saving all of your documents to a removable media (CD,
Flashdrive, external hard drive), reinstall the orginal OS (in your
case Home Premium) and then install the upgrade (Ultimate).

The reason is that anytime you do an upgrade............. whatever
problems that were present in your present OS will be inherited after
you do the upgrade. So, its better to wipe the slate clean with a
clean install of both OSs................ Your registry is cleaned up,
all the necessary components are fresh, and then lastly do the
updates.............. and finally put your documents back on your
fresh and new OS.

Personally, I prefer a clean install over an upgrade if you can afford
it. I went from Windows XP Professional to Windows Vista Business.
But I am a business user, and I know a little about IT can computers.

I hope that helps.

I have the same problem upgrading Vista Basic to Vista Premium

copying windows files -check mark
gathering files- check mark
Expanding files- check mark
Installing feathures and updates-check mark
Completing upgrade reboots once and continues upgrade

just at Completing upgrade Seems like it almost done Message pop's up,

"windows could not configure one or more system components to install window
restart the computer and then restart installation"
reboots and rolls back to Vista basic

Toshiba laptop
1.6 mhz
2gb ram
80gb hd
vista basic
model:A135-S4656

I have disabling everything in MSCONFIG
No anti virus (unistalled it)
turned user control off

I'm on 6th time trying to upgrade
I get this same message everytime , has anyone figured this out yet ?
