Roger,
In addition to my status as an SBS-MVP, I also run SBSmigration.com and I'm
the designer of the Swing Migration concept which provides a solution
alternative to the MS migration path for doing any SBS related migration
project. I'm just identifying this as disclosure up front, I apologize if
your interest in asking about this here doesn't include a desire to purchase
a professionally designed and supported solution, but it does seem that you
are looking for help with a project that I can provide to you.
The project you want to do probably can be done generally following the MS
project outline, though any troubleshooting or roll-back would potentially
be quite complicated. I have to admit I'm not really sure how well the
related MS path and support options fits into the specific scope of what you
need to do, or if it isideal for your needs. Projects that involve server
consolidation, explosion or multi-server transitions are quite normal in my
support process. I can offer that your project would not be a problem to
complete if you want to review and use a Swing It!! Kit solution from
www.SBSmigration.com and I can support you with several alternatives on how
you can work that project.
Most of my customers are doing the standard Swing Migration project outline
with the resources I provide, but I also provide alternatives and custom
consulting as needed for any unique projects. (Typically this wouldn't
require any difference in support costs to you, the Kit covers it.) I
actually provide flat-rate support for migrating anything from NT to 2003
domains and Exchange environments to SBS 2008 or most any non-SBS
environment.
The real question will come down to how you want to have your final result
to look, if you want to have a pair of Exchange servers as well as a pair of
DC, and where you want to have your DC roles and the total number of
servers. I'm starting with the assumption that you want to consolidate
everything down a single server environment, with that server running on new
hardware as the SBS 2008. The second point would be to ensure that we chose
the construction path that is more comfortable for your operational needs
and your experience.
The approach I provide in helping people with a Kit can address anything
from a simple 1:1 server replacement (such as the common SBS 2003 to SBS
2008 migration) or with more complicated projects. You can purchase a Kit at
SBSmigration.com that provides you complete documentation and tools, 90 days
of end-to-end support for the entire scope of the project, and the use of
the substantial website resources for research, troubleshooting and direct
support. The typical project outline allows you to build and test the new
server before you deploy it, and without having to modify your production
domain (as is the case with the MS documented project outline). I believe
that your project can be approached in this same manner though this is
something we can work through to design your best options.
I'd be happy to discuss this with you further here or you can contact me
through my website or directly at
.
