How to Upgrade to VISTA on 500 GB drive?

Now running XP on 128 GB drive. Have Vista Upgrade CDs, but I want the
upgraded OS to end up on a new 500 GB drive. The Upgrade process requires it
be applied on the current OS (not just verifying that there is a valid OS on
the system). The option for specifying where the upgraded OS is to end up is
grayed out, so the VISTA ends up on the 128 GB drive.

My XP CD is pre-SP2, so my XP can’t be loaded on the 500 GB drive.

How to upgrade and end up w/ Vista on the 500 GB?

Ok lets go by the rules on this one (there are more ways to do this ya
know!)

you can slipstream your XP cd with SP2 making it into a SP2 XP cd...

see here how
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp
and
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

after you do this you will install XP on the new disk and then upgrade to
Vista.

As far as I know, you begin the installation of Vista upgrade on the new
drive and at some point it will ask you to verify that you have a
previous full version of Windows and offer several options to choose
from, one of the options being to shove your XP full version CD in a
drive where it checks the CD and then permits you to continue the
installation.

To prevent it from going back to the old drive, I would just disconnect
the 128GB drive and install with only the 500GB drive connected and let
Vista format it and all.

"checks the CD " doesn't work with Vista upgrades.

Uh-oh. That's the way it's been in the past, are you sure? Seems
strange, means you can't do a clean install with an upgrade. That's not
nice at all.

I bought the full version as I'd rather save myself some hassle than
save a bit of cash.

During upgrade installation, do custom install. From there you will get
option to do clean install.

Hi ThePhy,

Firstly, save all important documents to CD or to a USB memory stick - these
documents can then be restored afterwards. You can reinstall the applications
themselves from the original media they were supplied on. Then disconnect
your 128GB drive and install your 500GB drive in its place. Next, folow the
instructions in my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in
the newsgroup 'Windows Vista Installation and Setup'.

It can, in a 128GB partition. Then Vista can be upgraded in the 128GB
partition. Finally you can run Disk Management and extend the volume
so it fills the entire 500GB drive.

Fool! Vista is not an acronym!
