I have an extra license for Windows 7 and would like some comments about
which machine I should install it on.

I have a 3 year old laptop with 1 gig of ram and plenty of hard disk space
but I hardly ever use that machine (Inspiron 6000). I also have a Dell
Dimension 4500 with 512 mb ram and plenty of hard disk space and this machine
is about 6 years old and we use it a lot.

Both machines operate now with XP Pro and are running fine. Does anyone
know if the Dell Dimension 4500 will operate fine with Win 7?

Suggest you post to a more suitable forum than the Windows Update newsgroup:
Windows 7 General
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...eneral/threads

BTW, the Dimension 4500 does not crrently have enough RAM to run 7.
Checking Dell.com shows that the maximum memory that can be installed on
it is 1 GB. Suggest you do that if you want to install Windows 7.

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...cs.htm#1101572

Minimum memory 128 MB

Maximum memory 1 GB

The use of Aero will depend on the graphics display card. Since the
motherboard supports AGP 4X, you can install a 256MB display card that
works with AGP 4x or 8x as the higher mode will fall back to 4x.

Adding Parts Dell™ Dimension™ 4500

Windows Update has nothing to do with upgrading Windows.
