upgrade from windows 2000prof to XPprof is hanging

I checked for hardware and software compatability, have a
Conexant winachsf softmodem that it says may not work
after upgrade and that is the only compatability issue
showing up. On upgrade after the reboot the windows screen
for xp shows temporarily than the screen goes blank and
hangs. I have about 40 gig used on a 55 gig hard drive and
80 gig on an external 110 gig. I also have roxio goback.
Can anyone help me get xp installed. I tried MS support
but I have to have my PID, which I can't find until it
installs. All I have is yhe disk and key.

Are you able to get into safe mode? If so, uninstall GoBack. I had the same
problem when upgrading from ME to XP. GoBack loads before the OS which can
wreck havoc when trying to upgrade/install an OS. If you can't get into safe
mode, a reformat of the HD you intend to use as your system disk is most
likely in order. That's what I had to do a couple of years ago. Once I'd
done that, the install went smoothly. If you want to continue using GoBack,
make it the first program installed after the OS upgrade is complete.
