Upgrade to XP Issues

2 years ago I upgraded my ME OS to XP using an Upgrade disk. My PC just
crashed hard (can't even do a "DIR" on the hard disk). The Upgrade disk
won't allow me to upgrade because it can't find a licensed product. The
oriiginal bundled recovery disks from HP don't seem to satisfy the licensing
requirement. How can I proceed with the re-install?

Among those HP disks is there one called Operating System Disk, or something
like that? As opposed to HP Recovery (or Restore) Disk. How did you use
the upgrade disk two years ago?

I was upgrading from an operating ME system, so the upgrade software "saw"
the original product. Now that original product has been trashed. So the
software is looking for something else. This all may be moot. My hard disk
cannot be found. It may have been trashed (virus?). In any event, I believe
the hard disk is toast. Time for a new machine. This time a Mac.

Thanks anyway!

Contact HP for details.
HP may have designed their CDs in such a way that they are not recognized as
qualifying media.
You may need to use the original Recovery CDs to install Windows ME.
Then you will be able to upgrade.

It is extremely unlikely a virus "trashed" the hard drive, but the virus may
have "trashed" Windows.
A virus is no reason to buy a hard drive or a new computer.
