I'm needing to upgrade to Professional so I can use the shared file resource
on the Vitual Machine program. What would be lost if I were to upgrade from
the Media Edition XP? I don't want to lose anything from the Media Edition
XP, but I need the files from the Professional XP.

If you try to attempt to upgrade with XP Professional then Windows Setup
may give an error message that the Product Key is not valid (invalid).
Simply you can not upgrade.

You may upgrade your OS to Vista Ultimate.

You may also go for Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate edition.
But for this Custom (clean) install is required.

MCE is built on a slightly modified version of XP pro so that it can support
concurrently logged on users. It also does not support all of the features
of XP pro which is why the OEM version of it costs less then the OEM version
of XP pro.

To add to what the others have said -- there isn't a way to "upgrade" to
Pro since MCE already is XP Pro (just with a few domain-network features
disabled by default). There actually is a way to get *some* of those
features back within MCE, but you lose the ability to utilize MC Extenders.

If you think you need XP Pro, you would need to do a full install, so save
all document and make sure you have all CD's/DVD's to reinstall your apps.

If you do an install of XP Pro, what you would lose is all of the Media
Center features.

As mentioned, if you are positive that what you want to do can't be
supported by XP MCE, then upgrading to a version of Vista or 7 that has both
the MC and the Pro features might make sense (if your system supports it).

You either reinstall MCE and join a domain during the setup or follow one of
the two methods listed here:

http://www.everythingtech.tv/2006/07...join-a-domain/

NOTES:

You will not get cached credentials back with the hack methods.

You will lose the ability to use an Extender.

To use the Registry hacks, you will either need a dual boot/boot disk or an
original set of MCE disks. Manufacturer specific install disks may not work
as they probably are designed to wipe the system and set it back to any
out-of-the-box state.

Any of these methods are not supported by MS

If you try the hacks and hose your system, you may have to reinstall.
