Upgrading 2003 AD to 2008

Can you see any problem with introducing a 2008 Server into a 2003 domain,
making it a domain controller, and then migrating all domain roles over to it?

I plan on leaving it this way for a fairly long while, unitl I can get the
other DCs replaced or upgraded. At which point I can upgrade the domain
functional level to 2008.

Any tips, hints, links or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike Scott

You must upgrade the schema before attempting to make the 2008 server a
Domain Controller.

You mean upgrade the schema with adprep, correct? I just want to confirm that
you aren't talking about upgrading the domain functional level, I should be
able to do that at a later date.

The Server 2003 machine can still be domain controllers in an updated
schema, so I don't have to be in a big hurry to upgrade them to Server 2008.
Is this also correct?

Thanks for your reply, I really appreciate it.

Hello ms.thenetworker,

No, works fine. Upgrade the schema from the 2008 install disk with adprep
command, make it DC move all 5 FSMO roles, make it Global catalog and DNS
server (AD integrated zones). Adprep has an additional switch /rodcprep for
read-only domain controllers if you think about to add them in the future.

Best regards
