As you may know, I recently created a new XP Pro SP1 install and began
upgrading it to the latest version with Microsoft Update (MU). (How
long it took is not an issue with this thread.)
I was very upset that MU would not offer to take me straight to the
latest versions. It wanted me to download tons of security updates (and
other types of updates) before upgrades to WMP 11, XP Pro SP2, and IE 7
became available. I realized later this was because those installers
assume that select upgrades are already in place.
What got me upset was having to download a lot of updates for older
obselete programs. Since IE7 is supposed to be more secure than IE6,
shouldn't the upgrade path offer you the fastest way possible to the
latest (and most secure) versions?
Hence, I think that MU should recognize such an older install and offer
a shortcut. It would ask the user which version to upgrade the system
to. It would then do the rest automatically rebooting as needed. Only
the intermediate upgrades that are really needed would be downloaded.
In this mode, each subsequent time MU is opened, it would remember what
was going on and offer to resume. An unattended mode should be offered.
