Upgrading From Windows XP

I want to upgrade to Vista from Windows XP, and to do this, it says I must
start the installation whilst in XP, not booting from the DVD.

When I try to start the installation whilst in XP, this is the error I get:
"Setup can not run this version of the Operating System. To install Windows
please try booting from the install media"
Well I don't want to boot from the DVD as I can't do an upgrade that way.

Any ideas on how I can get it to work?

TIA, Mike.
