Upgrading from XP professional x64 to vista 32? Possible??

I haven't been able to find any information on this so here it goes. I
recently bought a computer with xp pro x64 and was wondering if it is
possible to upgrade it to vista 32 bit with a standard vista home basic
(or premium, whatever) upgrade version. The reason for this is I
intended this computer to be used for home recording projects and Pro
Tools (recording program) does not support xp x64 or vista x64, and it
doesn't look like it will any time soon. So these are my questions:

-Will I need to do a clean install and still be able to use a vista
upgrade version?

-Will I have to get a full new version of vista?

-Is it even possible?

Obviously I'd like to take the least troublesome route (going straight
from xp x64 to vista basic/premium upgrade version) if possible. If not
what is involved??? Thanks!

You should upgrade to another 64 bit version of windows...if you don't,
you'll lose functionality.

And just as you also cannot upgrade from a 32 Bit OS to a 64 Bit OS, you
cannot "upgrade" from XP 64 to Vista 32.

The only way you'll get Vista 32 Bit is if you do a clean install. The
other alternative would be to get a Vista 64 Bit upgrade.

Why on earth do you want to do that?

Sorry, but you are asking for trouble. Stick with XP.

Just because software isn't supported in certain configs, doesn't mean it
won't work.

Many, if not most 32-bit windows-based progs do work with XP x64 and
Vista x64.

You should determine whether or not the hardware on your current
computer is capable of running Vista. If not you would be better off buying
a newer, Vista capable computer as opposed to replacing all the incompatible
hardware. If that's the case you must also make sure the hardware is capable
of running the particular edition of Vista you desire. If the hardware is
capable of running Vista Basic only then you will not be able to use the
more advanced versions of Vista.
If your current computer's hardware is indeed capable of running the
edition of Vista you desire I would purchase the full retain version of
Vista and not the upgrade. You can then use it on any computer you desire,
transferring it from one to the other as the need arises. However, you can
only run the full retail Vista on one computer at a time.

Thanks for the responses. Like I said, the reason I want to go with 3
bit vista is M-Powered Pro Tools does NOT support any 64 bit versions o
windows and won't in the near future. I also have a 32 bit only versio
of AutoCad I'm not currently able to use. Additionally I would like t
take advantage of direct x10.

It sounds like I should just get a full version of vista. Will I b
able to completely remove xp x64 and install a 32 bit version of vist
without compatibility issues? I have two hard drives in this computer s
is there an easier option? This computer exceeds the system requirement
for vista so that shouldn't be a problem, by the way. Thanks again fo
the help

If you have XP Pro x64 installed and it is running fine, why would you
down/upgrade to Vista? More stuff runs on XP, runs faster, less performance
issues and the like. Vista SP1 didn't in my opinion clean up enough issues.
I know you have this video recording program, but why not choose one that
works 64bit. Surely it can't be the only one. If you are technically
inclined, or want to be take a look at http://www.mythtv.org

Whatever you do, don't invalidate your XP Pro x64 license. If you want to
fall back to it, you can. If you want to dual boot, you might be able to.
Just don't trash your XP Pro x64 license. Damn, which I could have gotten
my last PC at the price I did with XP Pro x64...

If upgrading and you have more than 3GB of RAM, you will loose functionality
with any 32 bit OS. And looking forward, 32 bit OSes are in the past and
will be short lived. Most new systems, even low end laptops can do 4GB, but
8 and soon 16GB will be normal for desktops.

Clean installs are always better than upgrade installs. Get your data off,
and clean install.

If you use SMB/CIFS storage like I do, you will also find Vista a hassle to
make it work. And I am not going to scrap 2TB of disk for 1 brain dead
Vista Premium OS.

You could also try the File Settings and Migration Wizard or whatever they
ended up calling that to see how that works. But going cross-processor is
as mentioned not an valid "upgrade" path.
