Yes, it is recommended that you switch it on in XP -- even just so you can monitor the status
of it.
However, you can see if Messenger is using and detecting the UPnP support by pressing the Alt
key in any Messenger window, choose the Tools menu, then Options, then Connection category,
and after allowing up-to 30 seconds for the data to be obtained, see what it says about your
router (referred to as a NAT in the dialog).
