Urgent help required (Updates failing to install)

The following updates failed to be installed successfully:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
Critical Update for Office XP on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB885884)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885836)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885835)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB885250)

Error: There is not enough disk space to install the update(s). Free
additional space on your hard disk and then try again. I must have missed the
news post that suggested you keep more than 50GB free space for updates..

Please help!

Countless attempts to install the aforementioned updates all end up failing:
Updating via IE, Automatic Updates, Downloading each update manually.

I am using Windows XP SP2.

I think the most ridiculous/amusing thing about this whole problem is the
error message.

Do check on free space on your disk drive(s) by viewing My Computer while in Windows Explorer or simply double-click My Computer on the desktop.
Close your browser, and then run Disk Cleanup to delete temp and temporary internet files.

Suggestion A: Put some MS sites in Trusted Sites list of IE browser.
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser. Close browser.

1) From main Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>


Retry Windows Update.

Suggestion B: If still no joy, start on some research.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the set of lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here.

hadiaR,

Check your log for the calculations being done.
This same problem has been seen with ie6setup.exe
and each time that I have seen it the calculation has been
a negative number. I speculate that there must be some
sign bit propagation going on from a large number such as your
freespace value will be represented by, which is also being interpreted
as a signed value.

The only suggestion I have as a workaround is to try artifically filling
up your region with junk files in hopes that the symptom changes.
E.g. I suspect that you would have no trouble if you reduced your
freespace to less than 2 GB but perhaps even something larger
than that would still appear large enough and positive if it truncated
appropriately.

Again, please note that this is speculative. The only thing that I am
sure of is that having freespace showing as a negative number is
an indication that some value is being misinterpreted.
