USB 2.0 flash drive

I just purchased a new PQI USB 2.0 flash drive and inserted into the USB
port of my HP Pavilion PC running on Vista Home Premium. The system cannot
reconise it and asks for driver. The drive states Windows Vista compatible.
I insert it to other XP pcs and Vista pc and all work correctly without any
need of driver. With other USB 2.0 flash drives, they work correctly. It
seems to me the Vista on my pc does not work correctly. Can someone advise
the possible reasons and fixes.

Did it come with U3 software? That could possibly be the cause. Open Device
Manager and scan for hardware changes. I would return it to the place of
purchase and get something that is know to work, I use SanDisk Cruzer Micro
2.0 GB Enhanced for Readyboost.

If it came with U3 software then then try use your XP system to reformat the
entire drive in Fat32 format and then try it on your Vista System.

Also suggest that you get the hot fix described in the following link:

What is U3 software? The drive does not come with any driver. The system
reconises the drive name, Intelligent, pqi IntelligentStick USB Device but
seems does not work with my computer. It seems my OS is missing something
but other Vista system works ok. Very strange on my HP computer and would
like to call at HP service centre for help.

U3 is a software that comes bundled with lots Thumb drives lately. Its used
to securely synchronize yout files and access on any PC.

I would follow JWs direction and formation the drive on an XP based system
then try connecting it to Vista.

Hello JW,

Thanks for your advice. The drive does not come with any software. The
software needs to download from their website but those relate to
password-protected pc, encrypt file. I tried to format the entire drive in
Fat32 in a pc running Windows XP. It does not help the issue.

I checked your suggested link that fixes to the USB device after hiberation.
My issue seems related to drive reconginiation, not hiberation. I guess the
drivers in Vista OS does not have one for my drive while XP has. This is
not my first time to encounter this issue and my last time it happened on a
flash drive that I bought before Vista luanched. It works on many pcs of
Windows XP without any problem. It seems illogical but it leads the
customers to think in this direction.

Thanks for your reply. After launched Vista, I purchased two new flash
drives and both do not have U3 software. Can the C3 software be found on
Microsoft website? All the users of flash drive strongly believe the flash
drive does not need driver since Windows 2000. Obviously, it is not true??

U3 is a third party software that is distributed by U3, visit
http://www.u3.com for more information. Windows Vista supports Thumbdrives
out of the box, for older versions of Windows, you might need software to
make it communicate the OS, Windows 2000 I believe does not need a driver.

The hotfix fixes a lot of other USB problems besides problems related to
Hibernation I suggest again that you try it.
