Yeah, the page that has this link to start e-mail support notes that if the
OS was installed by an OEM (like Dell in my case), then I should contact
Dell. Doesn't make sense, since the problem was with the update, not the OS
install.
Fortunately, Dell has a wonderful support site. They let me search for
solutions, and the first one I chose had me modify the power management
settings for the USB root hubs and clear the checkbox that allows the system
to turn off the device to save power. This magically fixed my problems. I
don't know if it is a workaround to the problem I encountered, probably due
to the PnP patch. Or if the PnP patch reset those checkboxes. Or if there was
something set wrong during the patch install since at the time I wasn't
connected to my port replicator and didn't have all of my USB root hubs
available.
Regardless, it is fixed.
I appreciate you pointing me to Microsoft's e-mail support, even though a
separate source (microsoft.com) dissuaded me from using it. It would be
better in the future to use this forum to work the problem out so that others
can benefit from my troubles.
