USB Devices stopped working altogether

Hello Guys,

I am using Windows Vista 32 Bit Ultimate on Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop. I
have 4 USB Ports which were working fine. Suddenly all the USB ports failed
and did not get recognized. I reinstalled Vista and the USB ports were
visible again. There was a great sigh of releif.

Guess what, the problem has cropped up again. I suppose after some of the
updates from Microsoft or Windows Defender are installed this happens. None
of the USB devices are recognized. Last time there was a chance because of
sleep and hibernation. But this time, I am sure that it was not because of
hibernation. I tried applying the hotfix for sleep and hibernation problem,
but it does not help.

Occassionaly the system says, USB device is not recognized, contact
manufacturer ...!

These are the inputs I have with regard to the problem. USB devices have
been a hell after I upgraded to Vista. Could anyone help me ??

The same issue is occurring after I rebooted from installing Cisco VPN client
4.7. This seems to be my first mistake because this version is not compatible
with Vista.

Biggest issue is the keyboard and mouse are usb and no PS2 port on PC. Vista
will boot to the login screen but without the keyboard or mouse it seems my
only next step is to reinstall. Any other suggestions?

This solution has worked for some people with problematic USB devices:

Locate the file INFCACHE.1 in C:\Windows\inf

Right click on the INFCACHE.1 file, select Properties >Security > Edit, and give
your account full control.

Delete INFCACHE.1, or rename it to INFCACHE.1.BAK or temporarily move to your
desktop.

REBOOT

If this works for you, you can delete the INFCACHE.1 file. Windows will not
recreate it.

I've tried that, and the afore mentioned hotfix. My mouse is recognized, but
no other USB devices I have tried. Not the wireless adapter, printer, or
camera adapter, all of which were working a few days ago. Was it some
update? Can I rollback?

forgive me but it seems not to make sense to ask someone who can't use the
keyboard or mouse to delete that file unless he can access mouse and
keyboard in the start up recovery screen in which case it would be hard to
do unless you a geek? i don't know i don't want to insult but that's the
first thing that popped tomind when i saw post

you could but i'm guessing using a port replicator is out of the question,
and if mouse and keyboard aren't working now with your system unless have
you tryed safe mode? maybe it'll work from there but i'm pessimestic about
safe mode in your case.
