USB drivers failing

I run Vista on Dell XPS 410. My mouse and keyboard recently failed -- can't
do anything without them. Dell tried to assist but couldn't. They had me
reset the motherboard. Then they had me restore the system, whereupon the
mouse and keyboard worked for a short period (5 minutes or so) and then
failed again, whereupon I was stuck and couldn't do anything. Dell thinks the
software that runs the drivers for the USB ports is being corrupted.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can remedy this problem?

Any help or assistance is greatly appreciated as I'm growing frustrated,
irritated, and disillusioned.

Thanks.

SP1 upgrades the USB ports, and it sounds like you have reinstalled the
system without that. I would be sure that was installed, and if so, try
removing the USB drivers to reinstall the new ones.
Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the USB Root Hub
device(s), Action menu, "Uninstall", (do Not put a check in 'delete driver')
then Action menu, "scan for hardware changes", to find the device drivers
again automatically.

Thanks for the input. I'll try it, but my concern is that by the time I get
an internet connection (and my ISP is cable and very fast), I lose the mouse
and keyboard and can't move. So if I can't do this 1st thing, I'll try your
second -- which I think I'm more likely to be able to do. Do you know if I
can do this on the C prompt in the safe mode for Vista?

Did they also inform you that MS is receiving numerous reports about
failed USB devices after Service Pack 1 (SP1) installation? If this is
your situation get back to Dell....and Microsoft.

Delete all the USB controller drivers from the device manager and
restart Windows, all should be ok. Crossing fingers and toes.
